WOMEN & NEWBORN HEALTH

Whether you are welcoming a new baby or navigating pregnancy and the postpartum period, osteopathy offers a gentle, supportive approach tailored to your needs. Choose the section below to explore newborn care or prenatal and postpartum support.

Osteopathy and the Newborn

We evaluate the baby’s medical history and use gentle techniques. Excellent results can be achieved for:

  • Plagiocephaly (flat or asymmetrical head)

  • Congenital torticollis

  • Gastroesophageal reflux

  • Feeding difficulties

  • Colic and digestive issues

It’s important to emphasize that osteopathy for newborns is a gentle and non-invasive approach. Osteopaths carefully review the baby’s medical history and carry out light physical assessments to identify any tension or dysfunction. Osteopathic care aims to support the newborn’s overall health, comfort, and well-being.

In fact, the type of pregnancy and/or delivery can affect a newborn in various ways, impacting not only the body but also overall well-being. An osteopath can play an important role in assessing and addressing certain issues that may arise from different types of birth. Here are a few examples:

A long vaginal delivery can expose the newborn to prolonged pressure while passing through the birth canal, potentially causing compression and tension. An osteopath can help release muscular and joint tension, improving mobility and the baby’s overall function.

A very fast vaginal delivery, on the other hand, may expose the newborn to intense forces during passage, potentially leading to tension or physical stress. In this case, osteopathy can help rebalance muscular tension and correct any joint dysfunction caused by the rapid delivery.

A cesarean birth, by contrast, involves the absence of the natural compression process of the birth canal, which can affect the fluidity of the fascial system and the newborn’s ability to clear lung secretions. Through targeted treatment, a neonatal osteopath (in central Rome) can help restore fascial mobility, improve breathing, reduce tension, and support post-surgical recovery.

Postpartum Women’s Well-being

Osteopathy, with its person-centred approach and the use of gentle manual techniques, is well-suited to the needs of women during pregnancy and after childbirth.

  • Pelvis and spine rebalancing

  • Reduction of muscle tension

  • Pelvic floor support

  • Stress and hormonal imbalance management

  • Improved posture during breastfeeding

It is important to emphasize that any osteopathic treatment should be tailored to the patient’s specific needs and should be combined with regular medical follow-up. Osteopathy can therefore be a therapeutic approach to help prenatal and postpartum women manage and resolve a variety of physical concerns:

Rebalancing the pelvis and spine: After childbirth, the pelvis and spine can undergo changes in posture and alignment. The osteopath can use manual techniques to rebalance the pelvis and spine, helping improve posture and reduce any lower back or pelvic pain.

Managing muscle tension: Childbirth can lead to muscle tension and contractures, especially in the pelvic and abdominal areas. The osteopath may use myofascial release techniques and gentle manipulations to reduce muscle tension and improve flexibility.

Supporting pelvic recovery: Women who have given birth may experience pelvic floor issues such as urinary incontinence or prolapse. The osteopath can work on the pelvic floor muscles to improve function and reduce symptoms. In particular, I collaborate with physiotherapists and/or midwives who support the postpartum period through pelvic and perineal exercises.

Hormonal balance and postpartum stress: Childbirth can affect hormonal balance and create physical and emotional stress. The osteopath can work with the autonomic nervous system and the craniosacral system to promote relaxation and stress management, supporting the woman’s overall well-being.

Addressing breastfeeding-related issues: Breastfeeding women may experience tension and pain in the chest and upper back. The osteopath can help improve mobility of the ribs, intercostal muscles, and surrounding tissues, supporting better posture while breastfeeding and helping with congestion and breast engorgement.

Emotional support and overall well-being: The osteopath can provide a supportive and understanding environment, taking into account the emotional and psychological aspects of the postpartum period. A holistic approach can contribute to the woman’s overall well-being, both physically and mentally.
